If you are thinking it’s strange that your child hasn’t ‘won’ in a competition yet, it’s actually no surprise that our students who do actually practice everyday! They also:
-
Practice on an acoustic or grand piano at home
-
Use METRONOME (Muso Method's BFF) and count out loud
-
Continuously play separate hands with metronome
-
Practice ‘Catch & Go’ memory game
-
Work on rhythm, articulation and DYNAMICS'
But, but, but… ! Let’s debunk some ‘but’ myths today:
-
“But my kid would get frustrated and complain most of the time, so then we cannot practice!” Surprise surprise! This is human nature. ALL kids and adults get frustrated about things they CARE about. But as parents and guardians, we have to guide that energy to make sure our kids don’t give up and persevere! That means sometimes practice will be slow, and sometimes practice will be efficient.
-
“But practicing 2 hours 3 days a week is better than practising 30 minutes everyday”. This is FALSE. It’s actually better to practice 20-30 minutes EVERYDAY than practice more every 2 days.
-
“But I should only practice pieces during competition time”. This is also FALSE because scales, Hanon and Czerny actually HELP your pieces come to life - including their articulation and dynamics.
For our sporty Dads let me use a Football analogy.
⭐Scales = running.
⭐Pieces = football games.
You need to increase stamina and practice scales (running), in order to play pieces FOOTBALL games). Imagine you get thrown into a football game without drilling your kicks, passes or your running. You probably won't be a very useful team mate :/
